Example Configuration for Libraries

Libraries have special configuration challenges where legal or policy issues may require extra care. out libraries have publicly accessible computers for patrons to use. They also have computers for staff to use in their normal course of business.

Libraries usually restrict adult content on their public computers. Many libraries need to disable adult content restrictions on request from the patron.

For this example, we'll configure a system with 3 public computers and an assortment of staff computers and other internet connected devices.

Your goal here is to be able to change the blocking settings for a given public computer upon patron request. Specifically, the patron has requested that the Adult content blocking be disabled.

1️⃣ Follow the basic configuration steps to prepare for further configuration. Make sure you enable all the blocklists you intend to use. This will be the Default group and will not require special configuration.

2️⃣ Create a group for each public computer separately. For example, Public_1, Public_2, and Public_3.

3️⃣ Create a client for each public computer. For example, Client_1, Client_2, and Client_3. In the Group Assignment column, assign each client to its corresponding group. For example, assign Client_1 to the group Public_1, etc.

4️⃣ Lastly, click on SidebarBlocklists. For the Adult blocklist, click on the dropdown box in the Group assignment column. Uncheck Default and check Public_1, Public_2, and Public_3. There is no need to change any other blocklists.

If a patron requests that adult filtering be disabled for Public_2, go to the adult blocklist and uncheck the adult blocklist Group assignment for Public_2. This can be done from any computer on the on the network with proper credentials.

ℹ️If you have children using your public computers, we recommend you read the section on providing maximum protection for kids. You can use those recommendations on all computers and devices safely all the time, and still disable adult content when necessary. The patron will not be able to search for certain topics, however, access to websites will be allowed. This will keep you in compliance with all the regulations we are aware of.
